Year 2
In Year 2, children deepen the skills and knowledge they developed in Year 1 and become more confident, independent learners. The curriculum remains engaging and hands-on, with opportunities to apply learning across subjects. In reading, pupils build fluency, expression and comprehension through continued phonics and daily reading practice. Writing develops further as children learn to write longer sentences, use a wider range of punctuation and explore different genres. In mathematics, pupils strengthen their understanding of number, place value and calculation while beginning to work with multiplication, division, fractions and simple measures.
Foundation subjects continue to enrich pupils’ learning through exciting topics that bring history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music and PE to life. Children investigate and question the world around them in science, exploring topics such as habitats, materials, plants and the properties of everyday objects. Personal development plays an important role throughout Year 2, helping children build resilience, teamwork, empathy and responsibility. By the end of the year, pupils are prepared with the knowledge, skills and learning behaviours they need for the transition to Key Stage 2 and the next stage of their education.
